Tell Someone Where You're Going
This is a mistake even the most experienced of outdoors-men sometimes make. The story portrayed in 127 Hours is a classic example of someone who didn't tell anyone what was going on. In such cases no one knows exactly where to send search parties. Another problem that arises is that there isn't someone responsible to worry about you when you don’t come home on time. These serious problems can be easily solved with a simple phone call. Remember to always inform the person you call when, where, and for how long you will be gone. Signaling Equipment There are several cheap, easy to carry, and useful tools that assist a great deal in helping someone signal to search parties where you are. Material to build a signal fire is recommended as well as a mirror to reflect the sun light or even a loud whistle that can project sounds over a longer distance than your voice. |
Preparation is perhaps the most important part of being found if you one day end up wandering aimlessly in the woods. Several steps of precaution can be taken, including letting someone know of your plans, bringing a compass and other navigational equipment, and bringing signaling equipment. Equipment Navigational equipment is essential for anyone to bring to any adventure in the wilderness. GPS navigational systems are popular and work most of the time, however having an old school compass and a map is much more reliable when you know how to use it. |
